As a beach photographer in the Destin and Niceville area, I’ve learned one thing for sure: not all beaches photograph the same. Some have dreamy dunes, some have wide open sand, and others have that perfect golden glow right before sunset. Over the years, I’ve found a handful of spots that never fail to give families the soft, natural portraits they’re hoping for.
If you’re planning a session or just scouting the perfect place to capture your own memories, here are my absolute favorite beaches for family photos near Destin and Niceville—and why I love each one.
1. Henderson Beach State Park (Destin)
Henderson Beach is one of those places that looks like it was made for photographers. The tall dunes, natural sea oats, and long wooden boardwalks give every session a peaceful, coastal feel. The beach is wide, which means more room for kids to run and for me to capture those sweet candid moments.
Best for: Golden-hour family photos, candid playful shots, and large families.
2. James Lee Park (Between Destin & Miramar Beach)
James Lee Park offers that classic Destin look—bright white sand and sparkling emerald water. I love this beach for families who want something beautiful but easy to access (especially with little ones or grandparents). There’s plenty of space to spread out, and the light here is gorgeous almost every evening.
Best for: Families who want a mix of posed + playful images with iconic Destin scenery.
3. Princess Beach / The “Locals’ Beach” (Destin – Scenic Hwy 98)
This quiet stretch of beach is a local favorite for a reason. It’s less crowded, the dunes are untouched, and the shoreline feels more natural than tourist-heavy spots. If you love peaceful backgrounds with little to no people in the distance, this beach is a gem.
Best for: Sunset sessions, intimate family photos, and families who prefer privacy.
4. Nick’s Park / Lions Park Area (Niceville)
While Niceville doesn’t sit directly on the Gulf, its bayfront parks have incredible charm—and they photograph beautifully. The docks, peaceful water, and oak trees create a completely different look from the big beaches. Sessions here feel relaxed, quiet, and sentimental.
Best for: Families wanting something unique, lifestyle portraits, or a more hometown feel.
5. Okaloosa Island Beaches (Between Destin & Fort Walton Beach)
Okaloosa Island has some of the widest, softest sand in the area, and it’s one of the most consistent locations for lighting. Even on busier days, it’s easy to find a quiet section of beach to create clean, simple backgrounds. The waves here are often gentle—perfect for kids who love to splash at the end of the session.
Best for: Bright, airy photos with minimal distractions and lots of space to play.
Tips for Picking the Best Beach for Your Session
Go for sunset or sunrise. The light is softer, warmer, and so much more flattering.
Pick a beach with fewer crowds. It keeps the background clean and makes everyone more comfortable.
Think about your family’s personality. Do you want peaceful and quiet, or fun and energetic with room to run?
Check the wind! Some beaches are more protected than others.
